TRUST ME…..YOU’LL LOVE THIS: wandering
My studio could be described as “modern farmhouse meets lighthouse” – where white rough cedar planks and stacked rock marry into the most inspiring space. A large round window set high in the center of the soaring stone chimney not only channels sunlight (or moonlight) into the room, but it evokes the interior feel of a lighthouse which has always held a certain intrigue for me. While the guest room off the main living/working area has been simply appointed, the sleeping experience is luxurious, and the only piece of “artwork” on the wall is a small framed quote that reads: “Not all those who wander are lost.” It seemed perfect for a place that was designed to nurture creativity and imagination, afternoon naps and daydreaming.
I love these days of calm before the holiday storm. The chilly mornings come wrapped with an air of festivity and opportunity to pull out that new sweater we have been dying to wear, and in the shops, we can feel a return to “nesting” as shoppers begin cozying up abodes. The autumn shift is palpable – and we love it!
With kids settled into school routines and the holidays out far enough on the horizon that we’re not yet feeling the ticking clock, this is the perfect time to “wander.” Meet up with a friend you rarely see, plan a getaway with a daughter or sister or mother – or spouse – with no agenda other than that of spending time together. Or maybe you could use some time alone to take a deep breath and gather your thoughts before the bustle of the coming season.
Fearrington was made for wandering. If you have ever noticed our red brick pathways, they are the perfect roadmap for strolling and exploring our enchanting Village: the Inn and gardens, our menagerie of belted animals, Fearrington House for dinner or Afternoon Tea, McIntyre’s Bookstore, The Spa at Fearrington, The Belted Goat for coffee and casual dining throughout the day, Roost for pizza, and last but not least, our delightful shopping experiences at Dovecote, Nest and Sprout where even the shops are designed for meandering!
Dovecote is housed in what was once the milking barn on the original dairy farm, and subsequent additions over the years have created the most intriguing amalgam of spaces in which to wander. The arrangement is reminiscent of the beloved family-owned department stores of my childhood – where rooms/departments transported you to different places/moods all under one roof. Half the fun is discovering what’s around the corner!
Give yourself or someone else the gift of unstructured, undistracted, unencumbered time – for wandering.
Trust me…..you – and they – will love this!
