Sloan & Matthew’s Fearrington Wedding
Sloan and Matthew said their vows in the gardens on a beautiful fall day, and then off they went to the barn for an evening of celebration with family and friends. We continue to be so grateful to couples like Sloan and Matthew who allow us to share their special day with you here. Now, let’s enjoy their story!
How did you and your partner meet?
We met at law school orientation and have been inseparable ever since!
Tell us about the engagement.
Leading up to our engagement, Matthew and I rarely talked about getting engaged. I love surprises and didn’t want to be involved or have a hint that it was coming. One unassuming weekend in January, we went to the beach with my parents. Matthew suggested that we take a walk on the beach Saturday morning, to which I thought nothing – this was something we normally did. As we walked down the beach, we reached the pier and Matthew turned to me and said “Do you remember what we said here?” (approximately three years earlier, Matthew and I had hung in an Eno hammock under the pier and said ‘I love you’ for the first time). Matthew dropped down to one knee and asked me to be his wife. My parents came out from hiding and a casual weekend turned in to a celebratory weekend very quickly!
What made Fearrington the place for you to say “I do?’
Our engagement was only eight months!! So decisions had to be made very quickly. I had visited Fearrington on a number of times for sorority formals and work Christmas parties, and knew of the delicious food, superb service, and elegant setting that Fearrington offered. Matthew had never visited Fearrington, even though he grew up fifteen minutes away. I called Gilda on a Wednesday and made plans for Matthew, my parents, and me to meet with her on Sunday. Gilda made it very easy to envision our wedding and ensured us that everything would go flawlessly – this is a promise that Gilda and her whole team kept.
One of the biggest goals for us was to be stress-free and to enjoy our wedding. You hear countless couples say that they leave their wedding hungry or that they played hostess the entire evening. Matthew and I had the complete opposite experience – we ate more than we wanted (and were surprised with wedding cake in our room that night after the reception), danced until our feet hurt, and ultimately felt like we attended a party with our closest friends and family. I don’t think any of this would have been possible without the attention and planning of Fearrington.
Describe the highlight moment of your wedding day.
We both agree that the First Look was the highlight and most special moment of our wedding day. We were both unsure about having one, but are so glad we did as it calmed our nerves, allowed us to soak in the gravity of the day and our love for one another, and gave us some intimate time together before we became husband and wife.
What was the biggest surprise of the day?
We exchanged gifts at our First Look – I gifted Matthew a watch and he surprised me with a bracelet and a second wedding band!! Besides that, there wasn’t anything that caught us off guard – which was great and such a relief.
What was your biggest surprise about wedding planning?
Wedding planning with Gilda was so easy – almost too easy. I met with Gilda a total of three times and probably talked on the phone with her an additional three times. Approximately one month before the wedding, while on the phone with Gilda, I asked “Am I missing something? Why is this so easy?”
When people would ask me how wedding planning was going, everyone was always surprised when I responded with great. Fearrington was almost all-inclusive, Gilda did everything except pick out my wedding dress, photographer, and music.
Anything you want to add about your wedding story?
Our day was so special and perfect to us. We are so grateful to Fearrington for everything they did and all they continue to do (we are already planning to spend our one year anniversary there!).
