Meet Paul & Donna

Paul & Donna Fehrenbach have been Fearrington residents since 2004. We asked them what they loved most about living at Fearrington – here’s what they shared about their experience.

What persuaded you to move to Fearrington?
We lived in this area during our graduate school years, so we were well aware of the moderate climate and beauty of North Carolina.  When it came time to retire from our jobs in Minneapolis, the first thing we wanted was warmer weather but we also remembered how much we enjoyed Chapel Hill.  What made Fearrington unique was that it provided an open and inviting community close to Chapel Hill for people like us who moved across the country and didn’t know a soul.

Why did you choose to live in Camden Park?
We dreamed of living within walking distance of a coffee shop and a good bookstore.  Camden Park’s central location gives us ready access to both of these and more.  We can meet friends at the Goat for a cup of coffee or stop in to see what’s happening at McIntyre’s Books.  It’s one of our favorite bookstores anywhere.

What do you like most about living at Fearrington?
We like the variety of people who live here.  We’ve each been able to find meaningful volunteer activities through contacts at Fearrington.  There are lots of things to do right here and in the surrounding area.  At the same time, when we’ve been really busy, it feels good to return to this peaceful oasis of gardens and parks.

What is one of your fond memories of living at Fearrington?
One of our favorite activities on weekends is to stop in at the Roost (our Fearrington beer gardens).  We sit outside by the fountain, order a tap beer or glass of wine, and listen to the music of local musicians.  It’s a gathering place for people from Fearrington and the surrounding area.  We typically run into friends there but have also met some new acquaintances out there on that lawn.

What did you find unique about the Fearrington experience?
We built our house here.  Drew the plan on the back of a cocktail napkin and brought it in to the Fitch architect.  We’ve never done anything like this before.  He rendered it into blueprints and we went through the whole building process with the very attentive help of a Fitch building manager who helped us through the whole thing step by step.  That will be 10 years ago this July.  She has become a friend and we wouldn’t change an inch of the completed project.  We love our house.
