Please welcome our newest addition to the wine class calendar — our wine & book club ‘En Vino Veritas’. This will be a quarterly event, only virtual for now, and will feature different wine-themed fiction and nonfiction. Our first featured book will be Wine & War: The French, The Nazis & The Battle For France’s Greatest Treasure by Don & Petie Kladstrup. A haunting, yet beautiful, collection of bona fide stories from French winemakers & patriots during the French Occupation and WWII. Wine & War discusses “the remarkable untold story of France’s courageous, clever vintners who protected and rescued the country’s most treasured commodity from German plunder during World War II.” Intricate plots & heartfelt renditions from winemakers across France, world-famous vintners recount their stories of their time fighting in the Occupation, plotting against the German troops in town, being forcefully entered into the Hilter Youth party, and other incredibly brave & righteous memoirs from families such as the de Lencquesaings, Drouhins, Hugels, Nonancourts, and many more. The book club discussion will be held via Zoom, and we will discuss some of these prevalent families over tastings of wines from these same maisons, chateaux, and domaines.
To ensure proper time to read the book before class meet-up, this experience must be ordered in advance so that McIntyres Books has ample time to get this title for you. Please register by February 27th in order to receive the book before class. You will be contacted as soon as the book is ready for pick-up at McIntyres in early March. Take-home wines & snacks will be available for pick-up at The Belted Goat the afternoon of class. The Zoom link will be sent via email for attendance.
Online tickets include the take-home wines, the book, a bite-sized snack from Fearrington’s Chef Team, & the zoom class dialogue.
