We’ve got chainsaw artists. We’ve got pet psychics. We’ve got poison ivy, potluck suppers, and old-timers cooking cracker stew.

When I moved to North Carolina in 1998, I fell in love with a tiny town on the banks of the Haw River. The town was called Bynum, and the place became my home.

I had never lived in a town where a neighbor would hand me a tomato as I walked by, where the shopkeeper knew every person by name, or where a glitter-covered reindeer might appear in your front yard while you were away at work.

A web of stories and jokes, history, and silly nicknames was woven among the homes on the hill. I wanted to extend the joy of this community to my friends, so I started to write a letter every month that told of the stories I uncovered.

This book is a collection of these letters. In 120 full-color pages, you hear about the time Roy threatened Santa Claus with a claw hammer, you hear about Miss Mary Council’s pies, and you’ll discover how stumbling into a nest of ticks might just lead to romance.

Emma Skurnick is a full-time artist, illustrator, and teacher of illustration and design. Her paintings have been exhibited nationally and published internationally. She received her undergraduate degree in Fine Art from Binghamton University in New York, and her graduate certification in Science Illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She currently lives on the banks of the Haw River, in central North Carolina.
