Cathy Cleary, Caroline Taylor and more
Dear Gentle Reader,
Wanting to use your powers for good…
McIntyre’s is offering a terrific opportunity to help out future readers right now in Chatham County. While our Reindeer Readers program provided books for Pre-K through first grade, a $25 sponsorship Ready Readers will give rising third graders a book of their own to take home for the summer. Call the bookstore or come by today to ask how you can help out! 919.542.3030

Cathy Cleary reaps The Southern Harvest Cookbook: Recipes Celebrating Four Seasons
The southern garden produces delights in all four seasons, from asparagus to tomatoes, apples to collard greens. Make use of the bounty of your garden or farmers’ market with new twists on familiar favorites. Recipes for Apple Radish Salad and Bacon Apple Burgers break up a fall parade of crisps and crumbles. Instead of roasting, make Whiskey Braised Sweet Potatoes or Sweet Potato Peanut Stew and add greens to Shrimp and Grits. Recipes for preserving herbs, pickling peaches and berry jams mean that your harvest will never go to waste. Let experienced gardener and cook Cathy Cleary walk you through four seasons of fresh, flavorful cooking.
Cathy Cleary began cooking and baking at the ripe age of four. In 2000, she opened the West End Bakery Café in West Asheville, which quickly became an iconic eatery, and in 2014 published The West End Bakery and Café Cookbook to satisfy requests to share her recipes. Cathy and her husband own a small farm outside Asheville where they grow as much food as possible. Cathy is a contributor to The Carolina Table: North Carolina Writers on Food, and her website includes a blog of stories about her adventures in the kitchen and garden.

Caroline Taylor shares from Enough!: Thirty Stories of Fielding Life’s Little Curve Balls
How can she sleep with the rockers partying in the room next door?
It was just a drunken lark; now they’re in trouble.
Some secrets should remain hidden.
It pays well, but it’s the job from hell.
The phone calls, always for someone else, are driving her crazy.
Insightful and often darkly funny, this collection of short stories by Caroline Taylor is all about fielding life’s little curve balls—from by fighting back (How Josie’s Problem Got Solved, Elective Surgery), to getting creative (Alley Cat, One of Ours, Champagne Therapy), to taking the cautious approach (Ants, Finding Avery, Noise), to escaping (Enough, Departure, Red Trees), or simply throwing in the towel (Dumb Beasts, The Greatest Landlord on Earth).
Caroline Taylor is the author of three mystery novels – Loose Ends, Jewelry from a Grave, and What Are Friends For? – one nonfiction book, Publishing the Nonprofit Annual Report: Tips, Traps, and Tricks of the Trade, and numerous short stories and essays, which are featured in this collection and on her website. A suspense novel, The Typist, is forthcoming from Black Rose Writing in June 2018.
