Fearrington Farmer’s Market History

Growing up in Chapel Hill, R.B. visited the Carborro Farmer’s Market with his Mother weekly. “I remember there was an old white church near the fire station where ladies would make and sell baked goods,” says R.B.

R.B. decided that a farmers’ market would make a good addition to Fearrington. In 1991, he and Jenny partnered with a group of Fearrington Village residents partnered and contacted the Seeds of Hope Project. Seeds of Hope was an endowment project through Duke University which focused on helping farmers start “tailgate markets” throughout the state. When the market began 26 years ago, it was the first weekday market in the Piedmont!

The Fitch family envisioned a place where farmers and consumers could meet – both an attractive outlet for farmers and a source of fresh, high-quality, local produce, meats and more for consumers. To this day, the Fearrington Farmers’ Market exclusively offers products grown or made in Chatham County or an adjacent county, to protect local farmers and producers. This protects Chatham County farmers from being outsold by markets with different seasons and ensures customers when they purchase from the Fearrington Farmers’ Market that they are giving back to the local economy.

“The market’s customers have always helped educate us about what consumers are interested in buying,” said Cathy Jones of Perrywinkle Farm. “They’ve always been emotionally supportive of our farm. They actually care about the farmers, which is such an enduring thing to feel.”

You can visit the Fearrington Farmer’s Market every Tuesday, rain or shine, from 4-6pm outside the Fitch Creations, Inc. Sales Office. We’ll see you there!

Natalie Goldberg Lives Twice

This fourteenth book was written while she had cancer, "in case she didn’t come out the other side." We are so glad she did! One of Goldberg’s paintings illustrates the cover of her book; she says that painting is her "darling pleasure," the visual awareness and silence that feeds the two practices that... Full Post >
