Greetings fellow wine enthusiasts! Regardless of the degree to which you identify with the term, whether you like to enjoy a glass every now and then, or, like me, approach the removal of the cork from an old bottle of wine like a surgical event (full scrubs, sterilized Ah so, Tessier periosteal elevator…) we here at The Goat would like to foster your love for the drink by offering wine every week that we will showcase here in the blog, and have available for tasting on Fridays from 6~7 p.m.
We seem to be finding a lot of good wine in strange places these days, with the globalization of the wine industry opening the gates for adventurous winemakers the world over to satisfy their need to push the envelope with regard to where and what can be produced. Vermentino (grown predominantly in Italy) in North Carolina? Pedro Ximenez (classic grape of Xerez/Sherry) from Chile? Roussanne (Rhône Valley staple alongside Marsanne) in Washington State? You don’t necessarily need to look to the classics for inspiring wine. Pinot Noir is a varietal that has seen a little more international travel than most, and it is not too uncommon in places outside of your more well known Pinot hot spots like California, Oregon, and of course Burgundy. This week will showcase two great bottles from areas that you may not have seen vinify the great black grape, although referred to as Blauburgunder and Pinot Nero in their respective countries of origin.
Abbazia di Novacella’s Pinot Nero is a stylish and elegant take on Pinot Noir, with the words “supple” and plush” best characterizing the red currant and plum fruit. Fantastic alongside dishes of roasted game and meatier fish.
Anton Bauer’s Wagram Pinot Noir incorporates an herbal influence in the nose and leaves the riper, textured berries to fill the background. Take this bottle anywhere you can find a dish with capers or cornichons.
