Ned Cline
Reads at McIntyre's Fine Books
On Saturday, June 6th at 11am, Greensboro journalist Ned Cline
visits
McIntyre's with his new biography of UNC library namesake
Walter Davis' truly enigmatic life, The Walter Davis Story: One Man
Who Made A Difference. Walter Davis was a high school dropout and former prison inmate who grew up on
a farm in eastern NC. Davis went to Texas in the 1950s
and struck it big in oil. Among his
associates in the early oil days was George Herbert Walker Bush. Davis
was worth upwards of $100 million in his heyday of oil investments, most
of which he gave away for worthy causes. He was the
man with the money behind the medical programs Operation Smile and
Physicians for Peace. The library at UNC is named for him. Along with all his good works, he also had a darker
side. All this and more of his life are in this fascinating book.
