The French have a phrase – “la route du bonheur” or ‘the road of happiness’ and it means a touring route of exceptional inns offering wonderful food, hospitality and insight into the region. Such a magical trip would make anyone happy.

Fearrington House has partnered with other Southern members of Relais & Chateaux to create a Southern ‘Route du Bonheur’, spanning from near our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., to the South’s historic crown jewel, Charleston, SC, to the Georgia coast. Travelers can experience the finest of the South’s cuisine, tour some of its most scenic byways and stay at several of its finest independently owned properties.

This self-guided tour allows you to experience seven distinct Southern properties each with a unique character, offering you a wealth of rich experiences for you to treasure. Including:

    • The Inn at Little Washington. Only an hour’s drive from Washington, D.C. at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this 18-suite hideaway in the country was created by Patrick O’Connell. Centered in the charming colonial village of Little Washington, the Inn offers lovely accommodations and American gourmet cuisine locally sourced from the Virginia countryside.
    • Clifton Inn. Just two hours south by car is the Clifton Inn nestled in the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. This 17-room inn is steeped in American history with the grounds of the University of Virginia and numerous vineyards nearby. One visit may be all you need to begin your love affair with this unique Presidential Precinct and the intimate luxury of the Clifton Inn.
    • The Fearrington House. Four hours south by car lies The Fearrington House, in a tranquil farm setting just outside of Chapel Hill in the cultural and academic center of the state. Guests at the 32-room inn enjoy expansive gardens, boutique shops, a spa, and gourmet restaurants. The Fearrington House, recently voted one of America’s top 50 best restaurants on OpenTable, is located in the former farm homestead, serving sophisticated contemporary American cuisine.
    • Westglow Resort & Spa. Three hours west is the Westglow Resort & Spa, blending historic elegance with modern comfort in a restored and updated Greek Revival mansion. The 10-room resort enjoys 360 degree views of Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains, a full-service destination spa, as well as skiing and horseback riding in nearby Blowing Rock. Relax and rejuvenate in the genteel elegance of a bygone era and the tranquil atmosphere at Westglow.
    • Blackberry Farm. Four hours west by car stands Blackberry Farm, a 9,200 acre estate in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains of Eastern Tennessee. Each guest to the 69-room inn has access to the pampering of the Wellhouse, the nature guides and trails in the nearby mountains, and the skilled farmstead culinary artisans and gardens on property. Re-discover life’s simple pleasures and natural balance at Blackberry Farm.
    • Planters Inn. Six hours southeast is Planters Inn in Charleston, SC, one of America’s most historically significant and romantic cities. Expect to find upscale period-style furnishings and four poster beds in each of the inn’s 64 luxurious rooms. Antique shops, art galleries and the theatre district are just outside the door. The Peninsula Grill, consistently named Charleston’s best restaurant, offers award-winning gourmet dining.
    • The Lodge at Sea Island. Three hours south rests The Lodge at Sea Island on the coast of St. Simons Island between marsh and ocean, and surrounded by stunning golf courses. The Lodge is eminiscent of an English country manor with 32-rooms, each guest room with unobstructed ocean views, warm, delightful decor, and 24-hour butler service. Savor world-class dining, invigorating activities and southern hospitality in the majestic seaside setting of The Lodge.
