Mordecai House & Historic Park
One of Raleigh’s most fascinating historic landmarks, Mordecai House is the earliest example of neoclassical architecture in the city. Plantation owner Joel Lane sold the 1,000 acres to the city of Raleigh for its beginnings as the state capital, and his descendants lived in the stately Greek Revival house for nearly 150 years, until it became a historic site in 1930. There are several other buildings in his historic park, including the Andrew Johnson birthplace, the first Raleigh post office, a plantation chapel, and an old law office, all of which were moved from other locations.
