Continuing Education

Fearrington Village is located in the Triangle area of North Carolina, which has been consistently recognized  for its devotion to higher learning. This dedication extends beyond the region's exceptional offerings for degree-seeking students; it also reaches those whose intellectual curiosities continue well after graduation day. In fact, Chapel Hill was recently named among the "10 Brainiest Places To Retire" by US News & World Report. Below are some of the area's best advanced learning opportunities:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Program In the Humanities and Human Values
A part of the College of Arts & Sciences, this program has sponsored over 600 seminars, workshops and conferences since 1979 and has brought over 50,000 participants together to discuss moral, social and cultural issues.

Duke University
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) began in 1977. Since 2004, it has been part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Network, a group of over 100 lifelong learning institutes dedicated to providing excellent education for adult learners. OLLI at Duke offers a wide array of courses in literature, history, religion, philosophy, natural sciences, social sciences, performing arts, art and architecture, economics, finance, computers and lifestyle issues.

North Carolina State University
Encore Center for Lifelong Enrichment
The Encore Center provides noncredit short courses, study trips, special events, and extracurricular activities for adults aged 50+. Topics are wide-ranging, and courses meet once a week for six weeks. Over 1000 adults in the Triangle participate in Encore each year. Encore also offers social events and study trips and hosts an active book group, movie group, and writers group.

McIntyre's Books
Finally, a draw for many Fearrington residents in their decision to move here is the countless of author events held annually at our own McIntyre's Books, one of the South's most noted independent bookstores. These events, free and open to the general public, offer opportunities for personal enrichment on topics ranging from mystery to travel to politics.

Don't miss Bookends book club at McIntyre's, which offers lively and engaging discussions focusing on pairs of novels (or short stories or poems) that explore noteworthy literary themes from both classic and contemporary perspectives. View McIntyre's calendar of upcoming events.
