White Has Never Been More Colorful

July 29, 2008 02:47 by Daneen

I was picking flowers for the shops today and was overwhelmed by the prolificness of the White Garden. Tucked behind the Inn, this garden is planted in varied strokes of white and tender green and I love the coolness, calm and serenity emanating from this oasis on even the hottest of days. Wondering what it might look like by the light of the waning full moon this week, I wandered by with a friend after dinner and as I suspected: pure magic. But that can be said for the entire Village after dark.  If you have never spent time with us in the evening……oh, my!  A definite “must do” this summer.

If you wander by, you should be able to spot the following in bloom:  Summer flowering bulbs: Gladiolus callianthus (formerly Acidanthera), a white, fragrant, hardy gladiolus; Hymenocallis narcissiflora (formerly Ismene), Peruvian daffodil; two sorts of white Eucomis, or pineapple lily; a wonderfully fragrant clump of oriental lilies.   Annuals: Cosmos bipinnata (the tall cosmos), Nicotiana, Alyssum, Zinnia "Profusion White". Perennials:  various Salvias, white Hyssop bordering the central beds, a rather unusual Sinningia (closely related to the Gloxinias), three or four varieties of Balloonflower (Platycodon ): short, tall, double, and a very tall one flecked with blue-violet.  And, of course, the hydrangeas are at their most perfect bloom right now.

No wonder white is one of my most favorite colors~
