“Reading takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere.”
- Hazel Rochman
One of the most unique aspects to Fearrington is that there are no mailboxes. Instead residents are assigned to one of seven neighborhood kiosks sprinkled throughout the community. They each have their own charm and are each an excellent way to meet your neighbor, read posts on the bulletin boards and share in what is going on in the community and beyond.
My favorite of these is the “Smokehouse” kiosk, so named because adjacent to it is the original small smokehouse wonderfully preserved. The community has turned this lovely little structure into a book exchange. Perfect for picking up a summer read, or dropping off books or periodicals you want to pass along. It is situated around a circlular drive that leads to the actual mail kiosk, and within the circle is a shady spot with benches – when I took this photo, two gentlemen were enjoying a quick read beneath the trees.
Take it from me, if you are ever caught in a summer drizzle, or simply want to rest a minute - the smokehouse is a peaceful, sweet place to visit.
So from two avid readers to the rest of you out there...enjoy living in Fearrington!
