Arriving in Style

If you've just recently been to Dovecote or The Belted Goat after a pause of several months, you might have noticed something that felt a bit different.

It might have been the new courtyard entrance, which we renovated this fall and winter to provide a bit more charm. We started by removing the oversized holly hedge that required constant machine trimmings throughout the year. Next we replaced much of the brick pavers that dominated the space with plantings to give it a soft, garden feel. Finally, a new fence went in.

Two structural elements stand out the most: the picket picket fence and two handsome shade trees flanking the front stoop. The trees are a cultivar of Black Gum (nyssa sylvatica) called ‘Forum’ which have the Black Gum’s amazing durability and beautiful fall red foliage but won’t grow as tall, an important criteria for this modest space. They’re underplanted with mondo grass (which will grow into a serene evergreen carpet over the next few years) and English boxwood.

Separating the courtyard from the parking area is a whimsical round picket top made by Walpole Woodworkers. It’s surrounded by perennials and bulbs which now are in full bloom.

With the new trees leafing out, it’s possible to finally see it all come together. And don't be surprised if you see some metal dog topiaries staring at you as you arrive - they are cute and harmless!
