When it comes to plant material, I would normally say “Oh, no faux!”...but not in the case of the stunning amaryllis I found for Dovecote this year.  They are such convincing reproductions that we have even been asked how long the blossoms will last!  No kidding!  Vickie has potted them up for us with sand and moss in beautiful washed-gray pots adding to their life-like guise...the only telling factor that they are not-what-they-seem  being they are going to last well into your next life!  Available in a gorgeous shade of white and a delicious red.  I am already imagining how they are going to add life to a room on a cold January day.

It is befitting that a shop named  Dovecote would be full of birds!  All kinds of birds in all shapes and forms to embellish everything from your Christmas tree to your home to your wrist!  Pillows, votives, paperweights, ornaments, lamps, earrings, bracelets...right down to a glass partridge with a feather tail for your pear tree!

At this point amidst the hustle bustle of the holiday season, anything charming-in-an-instant is worth looking into!  I had no idea how versatile our Baby Tears orbs were going to be when I purchased them for Dovecote’s holiday offerings but I have been using them a million ways in my own home and they are fabulous!!! 

If you are not familiar with “Baby Tears,” this is a beautiful, tender green perennial that is typically seen cascading down pots or used as a ground cover, and the faux spheres I found at Market are as beautiful as the real thing – sans the care!  They come with a nylon thread for hanging (gorgeous hung from a chandelier!), but they are also wonderful set atop votives or vases of varying heights down the center of a table.  Tuck in a few tealights...and voila!  Charming beyond belief for such little effort!  We also have Baby Tears wreaths as well as topiaries already “potted”...all of which will move beautifully right into spring.

Purchasing for a retail shop is always a daunting task as one is asked to anticipate a buyer’s wishes long before the buyer wishes! We made the decision in July that we wanted Dovecote’s holiday message to be a quiet, simple one...carefully selected ornaments that would stand alone as a special thank you to a hostess or become a cherished heirloom for a family member or special friend when paired with a handwritten note.  I have found when I have less to spend, I spend more thoughtfully...which to me is the silver lining of this retail holiday season. It has given me much joy to watch the thoughtful deliberation and consideration of our shoppers this season as they are making their selections.  And “quiet and simple” seems to have struck a lovely chord.
