It’s a Snap!

November 24, 2008 03:39 by Daneen

I am always intrigued by the treasure trove of fun and educational toys Jamie offers in McIntyre’s for the young ones on your gift-giving list!

Meet BuckleyBoo...a brand new toy that will give your toddler a fun way to develop those all-important fine motor skills.  This incredibly soft pal features 5 different puzzle buckles for a child to practice “snapping” -which involves hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.  Conceived and designed in collaboration with a child psychologist, BuckleyBoo facilitates early childhood development and actually grows with your child.  Between 1 and 3, your child can practice “buckling” the buckle, and after 3, he or she will begin to understand how to “un-buckle.”  Snap them up for the toddlers on your list at McIntyre’s this holiday season!

Dovecote’s Signature Compositions

November 22, 2008 04:00 by Daneen

My sketches cannot begin to do these charming compositions justice...but, in person, they are captivating!  Made exclusively for Dovecote, these beautiful studies under glass are comprised of nature’s magic – from feathers to preserved ferns to funghi – amassed as though they were plucked directly from the forest floor. Look closely for tiny wooden snails in the composition entitled “Snail’s Pace.”  Especially lovely in a bookcase, on a sideboard or as the centerpiece of any tablescape.  These whimsical creations are varied in size and each is one of a kind. And the real beauty...they require no care!

Scents of the Season

November 11, 2008 02:51 by Daneen

Delicious holiday scents are not only wafting from the kitchens at Fearrington...but from our shops as well!

Sniff your way to the wonderful Paddywax Eco Collection of scented candles at Bluebirds & Hollyhocks.  From soy-based inks, to hemp twine, to recycled paper, this collection is committed to conserving our planet’s resources...so these scents make lots of sense! A few of my favorites: Frankincense & Myrrh, Clove & Clementine, and Pine & Amber.

At Dovecote, Rosy Rings Botanical Candles are back again...filled with high grade paraffin, beeswax, concentrated oils, and real spices, flowers and fruit.  Incredibly beautiful and deliciously fragrant with a long burn time – each hand-poured candle takes two days to produce.  We are crazy about Spicy Apple an Apple Pear this time of year.

Perfect hostess gifts...and a lovely way to spice up your holiday season!

Dreamy Mercury Glass

November 8, 2008 03:25 by Daneen

I have always had a thing for mercury glass...finding it to have somewhat of an ethereal quality.  Its color is often beyond description – akin to trying to describe the color of water in a clear glass vase.  I am captivated by a gorgeous pair of lamps in Dovecote at the moment that would be so elegant in a dressing room, a bathroom or on a bedside table.  Equally as dreamy are the pair of vases and wonderful collection of mercury glass dressing table jars and diminutive perfume bottles displayed alongside.  All that’s missing is a satin dressing gown. Quite glamorous...and simply out of this world.

Welcome, Mark Hewitt!

November 4, 2008 02:49 by Daneen

Bluebirds & Hollyhocks is thrilled to welcome Mark Hewitt to its mix of outstanding potters.  Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Mark is the son and grandson of directors of Spode, the fine china manufacturers. In 1983, Mark set up his pottery in Pittsboro and began making the distinctive functional pots for which he is known, specializing in very large planters and jars along with finely made smaller items.  He uses local clays and blends the different North Carolina folk art traditions together into a contemporary style that has attracted a sizeable following.  Mark’s work has been featured in the Smithsonian magazine and on the cover of American Craft magazine and has been exhibited in London, New York and Tokyo.  He is well-represented  in museum and private collections...and we are honored to have this opportunity to bring his work to Fearrington!
