Walking Opportunities in Fearrington

"From the start, Fearrington Village seemed designed to be a walking community. There were more than 10 miles of roads even in the early years and the mail was delivered to some half dozen kiosks distributed around our “country village.” For many that made possible a ten or fifteen stroll to get one’s mail. But sharing the roads with automobiles was a potential safety issue so Fitch Creations began building graded, gravel covered paths that paralleled roads with heavier traffic: Village... Full Post >

This weekend, Fearrington's Chapter of PORCH celebrated reaching their 50 ton milestone! Fearrington residents have donated over 50 tons of food to PORCH since May 2011, when the chapter was started. Spicebushes on Creekwood

While this picture may look like two people relaxing on a bench on our Creekwood Trail, if you could see an enlarged version, you would note that both Mark and I are hold planting trowels in our right hands!  We planted 50 spice bushes, a native plant know to attract birds and specifically, the Wood Thrush, along the trail. The Wood Thrush is one of five birds the NC Audubon Society is currently focusing on increasing their population. Once established, the spice bush will have small red... Full Post >

Helping in Haiti

For the second year in a row I had the good fortune to travel and spend a week in Haiti in a little village named Cite Soleil. Cite Soleil is known for its dense population and extreme poverty. I travel with a group of fellow nurses, doctors, and construction crews as well as missionary workers. We provided the community with much needed health care ranging from basic medicines, such as aspirin and vitamins, to more pressing needs such as antibiotics and first aid care for severe wounds and... Blue Birds, Wobblers & Owls, Oh My!

Blue skies and 68 degrees – we could have not asked for better weather on our 7:30am bird walk this past Saturday. Around 20 folks joined and while most of us were novice bird watchers, we looked like the real thing with binoculars and sun hats – perhaps my large cup of coffee from The Goat gave us away!  Not sure what was the best part, seeing a migrating Red Start Wobbler (cute little orange guy) or walking around the beautiful gardens or Fearrington with a bunch of other folks who...
