Fearrington Village, located eight miles south of Chapel Hill, NC, offers an internship program for college students interested in hands-on experience in a renowned public garden. The intern will learn from one of the most experienced gardening teams anywhere, interact with staff from Fearrington businesses including the Inn, restaurants, shops and a spa, and enjoy a positive, team oriented culture and a beautiful setting.
The internship experience will provide a hands-on experience in various aspects of horticulture. The intern may primarily work with one gardener, or rotate around the department, depending on needs and learning opportunities. Responsibilities may include:
Must be currently enrolled in a graduate, undergraduate, or associate program at an accredited college or university. Coursework should include botany, horticulture, ecology, design, environmental studies or closely related areas. Must have a valid driver’s license and able to perform physical tasks outdoors in a range of weather conditions. Must be a self-starter, organized, energetic, team oriented, courteous and outgoing. Must appreciate the Fearrington gardening style – layered, artistic, focus on color and texture harmony, and year round appeal.
Compensation & Hours
The internship will pay $11/hour, 32 hours/week, for a period of 10-12 weeks. Intern must align schedule with department’s, adjusting as necessary depending on weather, events and workload (to minimize commute costs, a four day workweek is possible). Fearrington does not provide onsite housing; however being near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, summer nearby sublet opportunities are relatively easy to find.
Please email a cover letter explaining interest in the position and resume to Greg Fitch. Letters of reference may be required. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
The gardens are a signature feature of Fearrington Village for our guests and visitors. There are about 60 individual garden beds, several cutting beds, an herb garden, and four greenhouses on roughly 20 acres. A team of eight, including four gardeners, an arborist and three in groundskeeping, maintain the gardens.
In 2012, Fearrington was selected from over 500 member properties worldwide to win the prestigious Garden Award from Relais & Chateaux. Our gardens have recently been featured in magazines such as Country Gardens and Our State. The gardens and the businesses in the Village Center are owned and managed by Fitch Creations, Inc., a family company.
