Fearrington Village offers an internship program for college students interested in gaining hands-on experience in a renowned public garden in the summer of 2014. The intern will learn from one of the most experienced gardening teams anywhere, interact with staff from Fearrington businesses including the Inn, restaurants, shops and a spa, and enjoy a positive, team oriented culture and a beautiful setting.

Program Description

The internship experience will provide an in-depth introduction to various aspects of horticulture. It is envisioned the intern will primarily work with one gardener. Horticultural experiences and responsibilities may include:

  • Daily tasks such as assisting with planting, watering, weeding, pruning, mulching and overall daily garden maintenance.
  • The completion of an independent project, to be determined in coordination with staff, with the possibility of it being implemented in the gardens.
  • Travel with and learn from our gardeners as they visit garden destinations such as plant nurseries.

Requirements
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate, undergraduate, or associate program at an accredited college or university. Coursework should include botany, horticulture, ecology, design, environmental studies or closely related areas. Additionally, he or she:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and able to perform physical tasks outdoors in a range of weather conditions.
  • Must be a self-starter, organized, energetic, team oriented, courteous and outgoing.
  • Must appreciate a gardening style defined as layered, organic, romantic, artistic focus on color and texture harmony, and ever changing, year round appeal.

About The Gardens at Fearrington

The gardens are a signature feature of Fearrington Village for our guests and visitors. There are about 60 individual garden beds, several cutting beds, an herb garden, and four greenhouses on roughly 20 acres.

In 2012, Fearrington was selected from over 500 member properties worldwide to win the prestigious Garden Award from Relais & Chateaux. Our gardens have recently been featured in magazines such as Country Gardens and Our State. The gardens and the businesses in the Village Center are owned and managed by Fitch Creations, Inc., a family company.
