Kanonkop Estate Wine Dinner

We live in the most exciting time to be a wine enthusiast in the history of the world. Some may say that this is a bold statement but the reality is, there has never been such high quality wine coming from so many regions all over the world. In the eighteenth century, when one mentioned world class wine there was just Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhein Riesling. Even a hundred years ago the conversation was still focused on those areas. Now the world is our oenological oyster and there are new classics on every continent (save for Antarctica, of course). One of the most exciting of those classics is the Kanonkop winery in Stellenbosch South Africa. On Thursday, April 16th we have the honor to be hosting Abrie Beesslaar, the esteemed winemaker for this classic and famous South African wine farm (as they call it in South Africa), for a four-course dinner at The Fearrington House Restaurant.

Why is Kanonkop so special?

It was established in the early 1960s in the Simonsberg region of Stellenbosch, arguably the area with the longest history of quality red wines in that region.

They make the best example of Pinotage in the world, the uniquely South African cross of Cinsault and Pinot Noir, that is not only enjoyable in its youth but ages gracefully through time. In addition to that they craft some of the most elegant Cabernet Sauvignon in the Southern Hemisphere. Their Paul Sauer Bordeaux blend is, in my opinion, a necessary addition to any cellar as it has the ability to age for decades and is the quintessential example of South African Cabernet based blends. It has ripe dark cassis and black plum, with cedar, sandal wood, and violets on the nose that move to a full-bodied wine with ripe tannins, balancing acidity, and a long finish. It will convince you of the greatness of South African wine and of the fact that no conversation about the top wine countries in the world can exclude it.

We will be tasting current releases as well as library releases during the dinner, all of which you can find on the website along with the menu. This is a “cannot miss” dinner. Abrie is a wealth of knowledge not only about the Kanonkop estate but the state of South African wine and winemaking in general. As always no one knows more about a wineries wine than the winemaker, so we hope to see you there for a truly special evening.
