April 9, 2015 9:00 AM | By Dovecote Stylists | No Comments
We were excited to catch up with Joanna Maxham, designer and owner of Joanna Maxham, before her trunk show at Dovecote on Saturday, April 11th and Sunday, April 12th. Read on to see what she shared with us about her fabulous collection!
What three words best describe your line?
Clean, simple, fresh and sophisticated. Modern design mixed in with traditional materials and craftsmanship.
What has been your inspiration this season?
When working on SS’15 I was inspired by soft pastels, and crisp fresh colors of the 1950’s Mediterranean towns and beaches as shown in one of my favorite movies – “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999). My FW’15 Collection is very much inspired by the 1970’s Parisian chic – Jane Birkin and the overall style of this decade – casual chic, softer, more casual shapes, leather tassels, natural earthy colors.
What is your favorite piece from your collection and why?
I absolutely love the Castaway! It is the most versatile style in the collection – you can wear it as an oversized tote, or a more compact satchel. Depending on fabrication it looks more structured, formal or soft and casual. We will be adding a smaller version for Fall 2015!
How do you view your personal style?
Casual chic. I usually remain faithful to a few basics, such as black jeans or leggings, layering tops in grey or black, cashmere sweaters, boots. I like to experiment with cut and textures more than colors, and add a statement cuff or necklace to dress it up.
Do you have recommendations on styling items from your collection?
I like to think that my bags can be worn in multiple ways and I would love to show that. For example the Castaway as a tote can be styled for travel, and as a satchel shown with professional outfit. The Arm Candy can be worn during the day with a black blazer and skinny jeans, or at night with a LBD or a tux.
If you could provide one piece of fashion advice, what would it be?
Know your best colors plus most flattering shapes, and build your core wardrobe around it. Then every season you can add a couple pieces in the “color of the year” or one or two “must have” items to look fresh.
We look forward to seeing you this weekend to welcome Joanna Maxham!

Fearrington House Restaurant, Wine
We live in the most exciting time to be a wine enthusiast in the history of the world. Some may say that this is a bold statement but the reality is, there has never been such high quality wine coming from so many regions all over the world. In the eighteenth century, when one mentioned world class wine there was just Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhein Riesling. Even a hundred years ago the conversation was still focused on those areas. Now the world is our oenological oyster and there are... Full Post >
In Our Gardens, The Fearrington House Inn
It's early on a weekend morning in April and the sun has already warmed the spot on the terrace at The Fearrington House Restaurant, where you've chosen to enjoy the day's first cup of coffee. A gentle breeze stirs fragrance from the canopy of wisteria blooms surrounding you, and you settle back to listen to the birdsong lilting through the gardens and savor the beginnings of what you know will be a perfect day.
As vibrant and beautiful as the gardens at Fearrington are throughout the... Full Post >
The Fearrington Granary, Wine
