Get to Know the Iberian Peninsula

Over the next few weeks we have two exciting opportunities with leading experts in the wines of the Iberian Peninsula. Wine has been made in both Portugal and Spain since Antiquity and both countries have gained numerous accolades over time. Now, however, is the most exciting time in both countries’ histories, and it is imperative to explore what is new while nodding to the great wines of the past. These two events will be informative, fun, and sure to introduce you to wines you’ve never tried before.

Our first event is a dinner with André Tamers owner of DeMaison Selections in Chapel Hill on Thursday, March 26 at 5:30pm. André’s portfolio of Spanish wines is, in my opinion, the most unique and certainly one of the most important selections of producers from Spain. André has searched out family estates from Rioja to Rias Baixas and Jerez to Penedes, all with a high level of quality and individuality. Many of the producers that he represents are considered either the benchmarks, the innovators, or pioneers of their respective regions. André has also been very influential in reviving the interest of sherry in the United States and is without question the most important importer of wines from the Basque region of Spain. André knows more about Spanish wine than anyone I have ever come into contact with, and for that reason he is one of my most valuable resources for information about the country’s wines, history and traditions. You can learn more about Spanish wine over dinner with André than reading any book, and it sure is a lot more fun! View the menu and the paired wines!

Our next event we be more focused on a single region, and that is the Douro Valley of Portugal. On Wednesday, April 1st we will be joined by Filipe Neves the Fine Wine Sales and Marketing Manager for Casa Ferreirinha and Ferreira Estates for a wine class at The Fearrington Granary. The estate is one of the most famous in the Douro Valley, known for their fantastic ports and also for being the first producer in the Douro Valley to make a high quality dry red wine, a wine that is known as Barca Velha one of the true cult wines of Portugal. We will taste through their dry wines, including an amazing white wine and then move on to their ports, with their 20 Year Tawny Duque de Breganza. This will be very informative and will show the many faces of this historic estate and region.

So, if you have been wanting to know more about the wines of Spain and Portugal you have no excuse any more to start journey. Both events will be held at The Fearrington Granary, we hope you’ll join!

If you've been in The Goat recently to gander at the beautiful new pastries and gelato, you may have seen the changes that have also been going on with the beer and wine here in The Goat.  The old kraft paper shelf-talkers have been tucked away, and replaced with the snazzy new "chalkboard" style format that is easier to navigate...and read!  In addition to the tasting notes, there are also pairing options for each wine to make it easier to decide if the Viognier that you're considering will... Jennifer & David

Jennifer and David tied the knot on October 12, 2014. These newlyweds said their "I dos" at the Garden House, and danced the night away in the Garden Terrace. How did you and your partner meet? We met while we were both working at Walgreen's. A group of people from stores around the area were selected to help remodel stores. For one remodel we stayed at a hotel. While we were there David would always come out at night to keep me company while I would walk my dog. After we started dating,... Full Post >
