How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe

You may have heard the term “capsule wardrobe” before. In fact, it is gaining a great deal of attention in fashion circles of late. But what exactly is a capsule wardrobe and why should you consider creating one for yourself?

The idea of a capsule wardrobe is not about limiting the number of clothing items in your closet. There is nothing wrong with owning beautiful clothes! Rather, the concept involves distilling your closet down to pieces you love to wear and learning how to combine items in new and stylish ways.

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of interchangeable clothing items that can be augmented seasonally. Typically clean, classic lines in a mix of solid, seasonless colors like black, gray, taupe and navy, the components are meant to be interchangeable to maximize the number of outfits that can be created.

Whether you are still in the working world or enjoying retirement, a capsule wardrobe can be the foundation for simplified dressing. By augmenting your attire with patterns and pops of colors, you can still be creative in dressing while maintaining consistency in style. Benefits also include ensuring that the clothing you have invested in gets worn and reducing impulse buys that clutter your closet but don’t get much play.

Here are components we suggest for capsule wardrobes:

Foundation pieces such as: tailored trousers, jacket or blazer, white shirt, cashmere sweater, pencil skirt, LBD (Little Black Dress), trench coat, and denim jeans.

Accessories in your capsule wardrobe should include: flats, boots or booties, clutch handbag, tote handbag, and a lightweight scarf.

Here at Dovecote, new fall essentials have just arrived to help you build or fill your own capsule wardrobe. Choose a crisp white shirt from Lareida or P. Taylor, QL2 trousers, a weightless hand-printed scarf from Suzi Roher and a cashmere topper from Kinross. That’s only one example of all the fresh fall options we have in store!

Visit Dovecote soon to see what’s new, and be sure to ask one of our stylists to show you how, with basics and fresh accessories, you can create a multitude of fabulous looks!

Lily of the Valley

The wonderfully talented Krystal Kast of Krystal Kast Photography recently shared a photo of a Lily of the Valley bouquet from a Fearrington wedding last year and it had an unexpected effect on me. I spend most of my days working with people who are in the throes of love and planning on sharing that love with their family and friends. I’d have to be a robot not to get a little swoony every once in a while! I grew up the youngest of nine children in the suburbs of Wilmington, Delaware.  My... Full Post >

The Big Book of Kombucha

Pick up this paperback tome on Kombucha to learn how to keep your SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) healthy, brew up some bubbly 'buche, flavor, and even cook with your batches. The SCOBY jerky may take it a step too far for me personally, but I am seriously digging the recipes! Stop by McIntyre's to pick up The Big Book of Kombucha: Brewing, Flavoring and Enjoying the Health Benefits of Fermented Tea - or call 919.542.3030 to hold a copy! - Kelley, Bookseller Full Post >

What Makes Fearrington Magic

It was almost ten years ago that I came to Fearrington Village for the first time. I had flown across the country to interview for the position of Sommelier at The Fearrington House Restaurant.  At the time, my wife, daughter and I were looking to relocate and it just turned out that I had met Fearrington's General Manager Theresa Chiettini and Proprietor R.B. Fitch the previous year at a Relais & Chateaux Conference in Switzerland.  I remember being nervous the entire flight to... Full Post >

Wine Spotlight: Java

This week we are featuring Java wines at The Goat! No, I don't mean coffee-infused wine, or those pop-ups you get on the internet. These are wines from the Domaine Chiroulet winery in France. Domaine Chiroulet is a winery located between Bordeaux and Languedoc in the heart of the Armagnac region. The Fezas family has been farming there for centuries, producing beautiful, value driven wines that captivate the senses. We're very excited to have these wines back in stock. They're an... What’s In Your Glass?

In January, Fearrington's wine team began a project to include more organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines on the by-the-glass list at The Fearrington House. This season marks the third cycle of these new selections. Wine Director Maximilian Kast says guests are pleasantly surprised when they find out how much thought is put into the by-the-glass slections. "Not only are the wines delicious and from artisan producers, but they are made by farmers who are looking out for environmental... Full Post >
