In Our Gardens
March 10, 2017 9:30 AM | By Gardeners | No Comments
While February in the Gardens at Fearrington is filled with quiet murmurings of spring’s imminent arrival, March is when it all gets finally underway. Each day brings an explosion of new bloom and fresh leaves unfurling, and if there’s ever a time for getting out for a garden walk, this is it!
Here at Fearrington, the first weeks in March are the time to spot deep golden frills of Cornus mas, jewel-like purple and blue Iris reticulata, narcissus of every variety, and our spectacular Lenten Rose collection in full bloom!
As the month progresses, Magnolias in shades of pink, white, and soft yellow bravely open, along with native deciduous azaleas in front of the Granary, winter-blooming Clematis armandii, with its vanilla-scented white flowers, draped over the fence outside Haven, and billowing Virginia bluebells in front of The Fearrington House Restaurant.
The month departs, lamb-like, with the pink clouds of the native redbuds beginning to appear, along with hundreds of early bulbs, such as tulips, chionodoxa, leucojum, and crocus, which our gardeners have added to the gardens over many years.
Hoping to see you all at some point in this glorious garden month!
– Julian, Fearrington Gardener

As the world turns and the news outlets fulminate, laugh, bemoan, and cringe at what is coming out of Washington or Florida during a dinner in a packed room, while the rest of us average Joes wonder at the wild uncertainty that is gripping society, I’ve been musing on the influence of politics, and particularly Presidents, on the artistic psyche.
I’ve been selling books for a long time, I have seen trends come and go, and I really do think that presidential temperament has a bearing on... Full Post >

Ah spring! As with every new season, opportunities abound to clear out the closet to make room for new and exciting wardrobe additions. Here is our take on 2017’s winners that will replace older, out-of-date styles:
Retire: Chandelier Earrings
Try: Statement earrings that feature larger, sculptural elements in lightweight metals.
Retire: Low Rise Jeans
Try: High rise denim or khakis that flow from the natural waist in an easy leg fit. Not to be confused with frumpier “mom”... Full Post >
