Megan & Doug

Megan and Doug tied the knot on November 28, 2015 These newlyweds danced the night away in The Fearrington Barn!

How did you and your partner meet?
In 2008, Doug’s younger sister Anna was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent treatment at UNC Cancer Hospital. She did well and has been in remission ever since, but still attends regular follow ups. Fast forward to 2012, I had started working as a physician assistant at the UNC Cancer Hospital and was introduced to Anna and my future mother-in-law, Theresa, by a colleague who had worked closely with them. Then, in April 2013, the Sterlina family invited my colleague to a charity event in Chapel Hill. They got talking about Doug, and how he was single and Theresa remembered that she had met me at the hospital. My colleague said I was also single and suggested they set us up. We both happened to be attending a beer fest in Raleigh that next weekend, so we met up at beer fest and have been inseparable ever since!

Tell us about the engagement?
Every December my family attends Theatre in the Park’s A Christmas Carol. We had taken Doug the year before, and he knew it was a big deal for our family. So, on December 12, 2014, both of our families came to the show with us. During the second act, Ira David Wood III (Scrooge) calls me up on stage, Doug jumps out of a giant Christmas box, and proposes to me in front of the entire audience at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. It was unbelievable and definitely unforgettable. Doug is quiet and does not like public speaking much, so the fact that he was able to stand on stage in front of so many people was incredibly romantic and made me feel like the luckiest girl in the world!

What made Fearrington the place for you to say “I do?’
Neither Doug nor I had ever attended a Fearrington wedding ourselves, but both or our parents had and said it was incredible. My dad had said for years – even before I knew Doug – that it was the only place we could ever host a reception! So when the time came, Fearrington was the only place we visited and immediately booked our date. The attention to detail was very important to us, as was the time Gilda took to get to know us and understand our wishes for our reception. She made us feel comfortable and gave us valuable input on how to make our event run smoothly. Upon seeing the Barn for the first time we also knew it was the perfect venue. It is beautiful without being stuffy and offered the perfect combination of magic and comfort that we were looking for. Now I know what my dad meant – there is no better place to host a wedding!

Describe the highlight moment of your wedding day.
There are so many! It was such a special day. The biggest highlight was having all of our closest friends and family with us all day to celebrate. There aren’t a lot of times in life when everyone can be together like that, and it’s truly a cherished memory. But then, there were the smaller details, from our 2-year-old ring bearer literally running down the aisle, to his mother’s fantastic readings during the ceremony, and my cousin, Andrew, singing to us after our vows. Then, walking into the Barn to be announced and seeing everything put together for the first time! It was truly magical. Lastly, seeing everyone come together and dance the night away to the fantastic band, Liquid Pleasure – and Kenny surprising my dad with a couple extra singers he didn’t know were coming – was something I will never forget. The whole day was perfect and better than I ever could have imagined!

Anything you want to add about your wedding story?
For us, family was the most important part of our day — and for us, family isn’t just what you’re born into, it’s also the family you create. We loved finding ways to make everyone in attendance feel like family, and Fearrington Weddings helped us do this. Gilda was such an integral part of putting all of our ideas together, and though you were never really aware of what she was doing, she was in constant motion making sure the party kept moving. I never thought I would need a wedding planner, but having her there and knowing that everything was managed was such a relief. Everyone in our family (including myself!) was able to just enjoy the day and not worry about anything — because Gilda had it handled! We also wanted to find ways to incorporate our home in North Carolina into our day. Fearrington made it easy to do so from the drinks, to the food, to the very chic Barn. When all was said it done, we had the romantic, joyful, stress-free, feel-good wedding of our dreams, and couldn’t imagine it being so perfect anywhere else!

This wedding was designed and coordinated by Fearrington’s own Gilda McDaniel. Photography by Stephen Thrift Photography.
