At The Goat

With fall fast approaching and the turning of the leaves on our horizon, it’s time to enjoy a bit crisper weather with some delicious wines. At The Goat, we have a wide variety of wines to sip while the fall breeze blows by. Here are some of my favorites:
Montinore, Borealis, Willamette Valley, Oregon ($18)
This aromatic blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Muller-Thurgua is a beautiful, easy-to-drink white during this time of year. Full bodied with a touch of sweetness, this wine offers abundant aromas of fresh pears and peaches along with a wide variety of floral qualities. Crisp acidity keeps the wine light on its feet and perfect for fall dishes, such as butternut squash soup.
Bonny Doon Vineyards, De Propio Gravitas, California ($20)
Randall Graham is one of the most innovative winemakers at this time. This Bordeaux style blend from California has all the characteristics for a delicious white wine. The semillon in the blend provides a luscious texture to enhance the crispness of the sauvignon blanc. A little bit of orange muscat goes a long way, lending the wine an aromatic edge reminiscent of honeysuckle and ripe orange. Drink this with seared salmon or any other full bodied fish.
Jean-Paul Brun, L’Ancien, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France ($19)
Beaujolais is one of my favorite wine regions for Autumn. The gamay grape is, for better or worse, traditionally linked to this time of year with Beaujolais Nouveau. This has put Beaujolais on the map for simple wines. However, this region boasts a wide variety of expressions on Gamay, many of them intricate and complex. This example from Jean-Paul Brun is one of those examples, with tart cherry and raspberry notes mixed in with a wild herbaceous medley and slight gamey qualities. Pair this wine with roast chicken on a cooler night and rediscover the beauty of Beaujolais.

At Fearrington House Restaurant, In Our Gardens
Fall is just around the corner and our chefs are busy preparing the Fearrington gardens for a plentiful harvest. We chatted with Junior Sous Chef Zac to find out what's being planted this season!
What is the vegetable you’re most excited about growing this fall?
We are really looking forward to growing some uncommon fall and winter squashes. People are very familiar with butternut and acorn squash, and they may have even heard of spaghetti and delicata squash, but there are so many more... Full Post >

You may have heard the term “capsule wardrobe” before. In fact, it is gaining a great deal of attention in fashion circles of late. But what exactly is a capsule wardrobe and why should you consider creating one for yourself?
The idea of a capsule wardrobe is not about limiting the number of clothing items in your closet. There is nothing wrong with owning beautiful clothes! Rather, the concept involves distilling your closet down to pieces you love to wear and learning how to... Full Post >
The wonderfully talented Krystal Kast of Krystal Kast Photography recently shared a photo of a Lily of the Valley bouquet from a Fearrington wedding last year and it had an unexpected effect on me. I spend most of my days working with people who are in the throes of love and planning on sharing that love with their family and friends. I’d have to be a robot not to get a little swoony every once in a while!
I grew up the youngest of nine children in the suburbs of Wilmington, Delaware. My... Full Post >

Pick up this paperback tome on Kombucha to learn how to keep your SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) healthy, brew up some bubbly 'buche, flavor, and even cook with your batches. The SCOBY jerky may take it a step too far for me personally, but I am seriously digging the recipes!
