“From the start, Fearrington Village seemed designed to be a walking community. There were more than 10 miles of roads even in the early years and the mail was delivered to some half dozen kiosks distributed around our “country village.” For many that made possible a ten or fifteen stroll to get one’s mail. But sharing the roads with automobiles was a potential safety issue so Fitch Creations began building graded, gravel covered paths that paralleled roads with heavier traffic: Village Way, Swim and Croquet, and later Millcroft. We now have some 2 1/2 miles of those paths. However, another opportunity presented itself — using the undeveloped lands between the various neighborhoods that had been given to the Fearrington homeowners as a part of the original development agreement. Some of these lands lay along stream courses, most of them had only been traversed by deer so that adding a few bridges, steps, and benches didn’t detract from their natural beauty yet made them attractive to walkers of different exercise agendas. We now have some 1 3/4 miles of quiet, natural trails through our woods and along some of our streams. As Fearrington Village continues to grow, we anticipate more lands being made available to elaborate and to better connect our system of off-road trails and paths so that they are accessible to most of our neighborhoods and walkers can have some alternatives in making their rounds.”
