The Fearrington House & Prostart

Fearrington’s Sous Chef Thomas Card worked with a team of five talented high schoolers for the third time last year, through the Prostart Program, a nationwide program that connects the classroom and industry. Every year, Chef Card’s Cary High School team has qualified for the National Competition. “I have learned how inspiring a younger generation of culinarians can be,” said Chef Card on his experiences with the program. “The process is difficult but very rewarding.”

The high school students start from scratch with Chef Card, learning knife skills and technical skills, and then move into recipe writing, food and menu costing, and educational information, such as safety and sanitation. “Team work and communication is the most difficult thing to teach,” said Chef Card. “When you have four people working on their own projects, it’s hard to make them realize that they can’t complete the task with out talking to each other and working together.”

A Smoky Summer Cocktail

The bittersweet flavors of the Mezcal inspired the name for this unique cocktail. With lots of ingredients grown in the gardens at Fearrington, to the combinations of fennel, gentian root and sea salt, this cocktail is not for the faint of heart. Smoky Summer Cocktail Mezcal's origins in Oaxaca inspired the name for this cocktail. The flavors and aromatics from Salers Gentian Root Liqueur, a gentian root commonly used in making bitters lend a bittersweet profile. The fennel... Full Post >

Eating & Reading Grilled Cheese

To Brie or not to Brie: that is the question. Grab up this gooey cookbook to reimagine sandwiches, soups, pickles, spreads, and mac n' cheeses. My favorite? The Sunday Brunch sandwich, a delectable melding of Brie and strawberries bookended by French-toasted challah bread; the whole lot smothered in maple syrup. I'm sure this is very healthy, because of the fruit, of course. . . Stop by McIntyre's to pick up Grilled Cheese Kitchen - or call 919.542.3030 to hold a... Full Post >

Six Essential Bags Every Woman Should Own

We found it very difficult to narrow our handbag selection to a measly six, but if pressed these are the perfect ones. Crossbody: a crossbody is key. It's not too big, not too small, and perfect for weekend errands such as scoping out the farmer's market and going for coffee (and shopping at your favorite local boutique)! Hands-free shopping is very enjoyable. We love ones from Ceri Hoover, a Nashville designer who does beautiful things with leather and... Full Post >

Amy & Joseph

Amy and Joseph tied the knot on May 7, 2016. These newlyweds said their "I dos" at the Willow Oaks, and danced the night away in the Fearrington Barn. How did you and your partner meet? Joseph and I met in law school at Campbell University - Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. He sat just a couple of seats down from me in class, and when we realized we had a mutual friend outside of school, we got to talking and a few weeks into the fall semester, he asked me to take a study break (on... Sarah’s Six-Star Story

Why six stars? Because this is a wonderful young adult novel. It hits it out of the park on all my criteria - places, people, plot, pace, and prose. Plus . . . poetry! Sarah is sentenced to a poetry class and community service after an evening goes awry. Along the way, she discovers herself.
