Doing Our Part at Fearrington

The Fearrington House Restaurant started working with the Green Restaurant Association in 2008 to demonstrate a commitment to the local environment. Shortly thereafter, Fearrington House Restaurant became a Certified Green Restaurant®. In celebration of Earth Day, we want to share how we’re doing our part to protect and nurture our habitat.

For the last several years we’ve grown our sustainable practices:

Farm-to-Table
Fearrington has worked with local farmers and growers since The Fearrington House Restaurant was established over 30 years ago. One of the produce suppliers for the restaurant began the Fearrington Farmer’s Market initiative over 25 years ago. Every Tuesday from April through November, local farmers, growers and suppliers come to Fearrington Village to meet resident consumers.

This year, our chefs began clearing out old hoop houses to grow even more vegetables on site! These ingredients are used in seasonal menus that Chef Bedford creates with his team. To read more about their growing garden, click here.

Recycling & Composting
Our on-site compost bin is filled with raw vegetables, fruits, egg shells, egg boxes and other items that can’t be used in the restaurants. Our Gardening Team is able to use this compost when its ready to fertilize our plants! Fearrington also emphasizes recycling as much as possible, from to-go materials to old bed sheets!

Bees

Fall 2015 Photoshoot

Our bee hive has been growing over the past three years! Bees are essential for so many aspects of our lives, from food, to clothing, to sustaining native plants and animals. Chef Colin has harvested anywhere from 30 to 120 pounds of honey from our hives. To read more about our buzzing buddies, click here!

Roasting Coffee

At Fearrington we roast our signature blend coffees on-site. In fact, we roast around 150 pounds of coffee each week! So what does “roasting coffee” actually mean? We asked our coffee roaster Patrick that very question. “Roasting coffee is the process of transforming green coffee beans, physically and chemically, using heat,” says Patrick. “We use a very unique opened flame rotating drum roaster, our beloved Melina. Once the beans are poured inside the drum it will go through a... Full Post >
