If you garden, you’re undoubtedly excited that our average frost date has passed – timed with taxes, why is that? – and you can safely start installing those summer crop seedlings in your backyard garden.
Like many Americans, you’ll probably be growing at least several types of tomatoes, because after all nothing packs as much flavor as eating a ripened tomato off the vine, can be served in so many different ways and is hefty enough to be the mainstay of a meal.
How to have better yields and fewer diseases and pests than ever before? How to choose from among the dozens of varieties out there? What are the most effective growing techniques? How to prune?
A great resource is Craig LeHoullier, a national tomato expert who happens to live right here in the Triangle (and gardeners know the importance of getting local advice on crops that have been trialed in our summer heat and humidity). He will be talking at McIntyre’s Books on Saturday, April 25th at 11am – and word has it, will be selling seedlings of some of his most productive tomato varieties.
Introducing Craig will be Brie Arthur, a horticultural expert also from the Triangle. Brie is a correspondent on PBS’ Growing a Greener World and grows dozens of tomatoes in her own landscape near Raleigh. Two experts on America’s favorite backyard crop – right here at Fearrington.
