Six Essential Bags Every Woman Should Own

We found it very difficult to narrow our handbag selection to a measly six, but if pressed these are the perfect ones.

Crossbody: a crossbody is key. It’s not too big, not too small, and perfect for weekend errands such as scoping out the farmer’s market and going for coffee (and shopping at your favorite local boutique)! Hands-free shopping is very enjoyable. We love ones from Ceri Hoover, a Nashville designer who does beautiful things with leather and suede.

Streamlined work satchel: this is a workweek essential. It needs to be a great classic shape, a great classic color, and fit all your stuff. You don’t want to be a distraction in meetings, but holding a fabulous classic handbag helps you exude confidence. Try the Castaway from Joanna Maxham, which also doubles as an effective and stylish carry-on.

Roomy tote: zipping around town has never been easier when you have a good tote. From library trips to classes at the gym, a tote is the perfect carry-all. There are just too many reasons to have a tote to not include it on this list!

Backpack: like the crossbody, we love the hands-free convenience of a backpack. We also love the hip, cool girl factor. This is a little bigger than a crossbody, but not as big as a tote and serves as a great everyday bag. We love the ones we carry from Cyan!

Clutch: okay, we’re cheating because this is two in one. You definitely need a day clutch and an evening clutch. A day clutch is . . . well, clutch for when you’re just stepping out for a bit (think brunch with the girls), and an evening clutch is there for you during date night or at a gala. We love to switch it up and wear our sparkly Sondra Roberts beaded clutches with a simple tee and jeans for a day date, just to break the rules a little bit.

Weekender: for the serial overpacker, a weekender is a great way to sneak everything in and still maintain the illusion of being well put together. There’s so much room in these bags! You can fit everything you actually need (and those extra shoes that you also definitely need). The stark black and white duffel from Graf and Lantz at Dovecote is a delightful little weekend friend.

Pop by the store to stock up on all the fundamental handbags. Ask one of our stylists to help you put together the essential handbag collection!

Amy & Joseph

Amy and Joseph tied the knot on May 7, 2016. These newlyweds said their "I dos" at the Willow Oaks, and danced the night away in the Fearrington Barn. How did you and your partner meet? Joseph and I met in law school at Campbell University - Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. He sat just a couple of seats down from me in class, and when we realized we had a mutual friend outside of school, we got to talking and a few weeks into the fall semester, he asked me to take a study break (on... Sarah’s Six-Star Story

Why six stars? Because this is a wonderful young adult novel. It hits it out of the park on all my criteria - places, people, plot, pace, and prose. Plus . . . poetry! Sarah is sentenced to a poetry class and community service after an evening goes awry. Along the way, she discovers herself. Q&A with Cara May

We were thrilled to chat with designer Cara May before her trunk show at Dovecote on Saturday, August 20th and Sunday, August 21st. Here is what she shared with us about the collection! What three words best describe your line? Artisanal, understated, deconstructed. What has been your inspiration this season? I have been doing quite a bit of hiking in the Great Craggy Mountains this summer. There is something magical about the native grasses and evergreen shrubs up there that all... Full Post >
