Casey and Clay tied the knot on September 6, 2014. These newlyweds said their “I dos” at beautiful offsite church in Chapel Hill, and danced the night away in the Fearrington Barn.
How did you and your partner meet?
As new students at UNC-Chapel Hill we had a lot of mutual friends, but our paths never crossed (though Clay claims he noticed me several times at the Rams Head dining hall). We were officially introduced at the end of our sophomore year, but I left soon after to study abroad in London. We remained friends, and the summer before our senior year I decided to live in Chapel Hill for an internship instead of heading home to Maryland (where I’m from). Luckily, Clay had also decided to stay in Chapel Hill to continue working at a restaurant on Franklin Street. We had our first date at Tyler’s Taproom in Carrboro, started dating that summer, and the rest is history!
Tell us about the engagement?
Clay proposed at my family’s lake house in Deep Creek, Maryland over Fourth of July weekend. Unbeknownst to me, my entire family was in on the surprise! Clay had written me a message, put it in a bottle and hid the bottle at the lake’s edge down by our dock. He invited me down to the dock to play with our dog, Kaela. Thinking nothing of it, I followed him down to the dock. But the bottle had washed away! Improvising, Clay walked me out onto the dock where he popped the question – I was completely surprised! After enjoying the amazing moment together, we went back up to the house to celebrate with my entire family!
What made Fearrington the place for you to say “I do?’
Because Clay and I met in Chapel Hill, we knew we wanted to get married in the area. I looked into a few local venues, but Fearrington was the first place we visited. We immediately fell in love! The quaint, romantic grounds were perfect for us. We loved everything we saw – from The Fearrington House to the barn to the cute little book store. And with our families traveling from all over for the wedding, we knew they would love to stay at The Inn. We booked Fearrington right away – without ever looking at another venue! And we couldn’t be happier.
Describe the highlight moment of your wedding day.
The entire day was magical! But if I had to choose, I would say the sparkler send off at the very end of the night. The reception had been a blast – the food was delicious, the band was amazing and we danced the night away. As we exited the barn as husband and wife, all of our beloved friends and family spread down the entire patio, glowing in the light of sparklers. Clay and I walked slowly through the crowd, basking in the moment and truly feeling the love that would send us off into the world! At the end of the walk we spotted my parents and gave them a goodbye hug. It was a very special moment for us both.
Is there anything else you want to share about your wedding story?
Clay and I opted not to see each other before the ceremony, which was both exciting and nerve-racking! To ease our nerves we decided to exchange letters before the ceremony. We met on opposite sides of a tall fence on the Fearrington grounds and held hands without seeing each other. We read the letters, and just feeling each other’s presence was enough! Moments later, we locked eyes as I walked down the aisle to my future husband. The first moment that Clay saw me is one I will never forget. And, we’ve decided to reread the letters to each other every year on our anniversary!
Casey and Clay wanted to share the beautiful video of their wedding celebration at Fearrington. Enjoy!
