Barboursville, Cabernet Franc, Reserve, Virginia, 2013 – $25
From the hands of the talented wine artist Luca Paschina comes this delicious Cabernet Franc, a testament to the continued greatness of Virginia’s most iconic wine estate. On the nose this wine has fruit notes of wild cherry, ripe strawberry and cranberry compote, complimented by notes of tarragon, sage and bell pepper. This wine is dry, medium-plus in body, with ripe fruit to balance subtle earthy and herbal notes. This is a Cabernet Franc for those who love the red wines of the Loire Valley, as well as those of Bordeaux. It is also a perfect complement to the holiday table, pairing well with roasts, baked hams, and traditional holiday side dishes.
Ravines, Riesling, Finger Lakes, New York, 2014 – $19
It turns out, and not surprisingly, that the Finger Lakes in New York is the spot extraordinaire for Riesling in the United States. This wine is made by Morten Hallgren. Hallgren, who literally grew up in the vineyards of Provence, studied wine-making and vineyard management at the oenology and viticultural school in Montpellier France. He has worked in wineries in France and the United States, honing his craft, until he started Ravines in 2003 with his wife Lisa on Keuka lake in the Finger Lakes. This Riesling is highly aromatic with notes of lime zest, fresh white peach, apricot and nectarine with white floral notes, fresh ginger and cardamom all dancing beautifully together on the nose. On the palate the wine is dry, with high acidity, balanced by a fuller body, and a long mineral driven finish. This wine is very versatile, and can complement the holiday table very well from meat dishes to vegetarian.
Quinta do Infantado, Tawny Port, Douro Valley, Portugal, NV – $20
This wine comes from one of the premier estate and family-owned Port houses. Established in 1979, during a period when only the large shipping companies were allowed to export Port wine, the estate has slowly built up their tawny collection. The winery is located in Pinhao, in the centre of the Cima Corgo, which is considered the best vineyard area in all of the Douro Valley. The estate is run by the brother and sister team of João Roseira (winemaker/vineyard manager) and Catherine Roseira (Chief Executive). Their tawny port is the most complex and delicious wine that falls into the category of non-age designate Tawny, a category that often showcases wines of little finesse. The taster is greeted with aromas of red skin plum, dried cherries, fig paste, cocoa powder, leather and walnuts. On the palate the Infantado Tawnies are always a bit drier than their contemporaries, with firm tannins, acidity, and complex finish. This wine is perfect for a wide variety of cheeses, but as a special treat for holiday parties nothing compares to the way it pairs with a great Stilton.

Winter is drawing close and with the dropping temperatures we love to pair a warm dinner from The Fearrington House Restaurant with a specialty cocktail. We suggest the:

In Our Gardens
Not sure what to get the garden lover in your life? Having been the recipients of many thoughtful, generous, but not-so-useful gifts from family and friends who are not of the gardening persuasion, the Fearrington garden team devoted a rainy morning to compiling a list we hope will be helpful as the holidays approach. These are the things which would truly make us smile (were we to be gifted with one)! These gifts can be "googled" to find retailers -- happy shopping.
At the top of our list,... Full Post >
As the buyer for Dovecote Style, I have the daunting (but exciting) task of sorting through a world of accessories each season. Every once in awhile, I am blown away by a design that hits every mark on my checklist and really stands out in the vast sea of options.
Fairchild|Baldwin neckwear is at the top of my list this season for its great style (ultra chic and simply gorgeous), its versatility (jeans to cocktails), wearability (clever, clever construction) and most of all, its flatter... Full Post >
