Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum)
With the worst of summer heat behind us and lovely fall planting weather ahead, now is the perfect time to consider planting native trees and shrubs for birds and other wildlife to enjoy!
As we’ve been finding here in the gardens at Fearrington, so many of our favorite natives offer not only sustenance for wildlife, but also add dazzling fall color and bright winter berries to the landscape. There are plants for every garden need available from local growers and nurseries too – ranging in size and form from Fothergillas and Sumacs, to Persimmons, deciduous Hollies, and Sourwoods.
American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana)
All are beautiful, and most offer the added benefit of being well-adapted to the variable Piedmont weather conditions. So if you’re looking for a small tree with spectacular orange fall foliage and a shapely, graceful habit, why not walk past the Japanese maples – lovely as they are – and consider our native Sassafras, whose leaves plays host to Spicebush and Swallowtail butterfly larvae? If it’s bright berries you’re longing to see in your landscape, try adding an American Beautyberry, with eye-catching purple fruit clustered along its arching stems to feed a variety of birds.
This fall, there are more natives available for homeowners than ever before, and it’s the perfect time to get planting!

At Dovecote, Style Defined
Generally speaking, women will favor one style category — Classic, Bohemian, Chic or Avant Garde. Classic style is defined by timelessness, simplicity and impeccable taste, with lots of neutrals while the bohemian (or boho) style employs color and an organic vintage sensibility. Chic is the perfect example of elegance and is embodied by those fashionable women who are aware of trends without necessarily following them. The avant garde fashionista never backs away from a risk. They are the... Full Post >
The Fearrington Granary, The Fearrington House Inn, Wine
We are super excited to have Diane Flynt, cider-maker and apple farmer extraordinaire, joining us for a class at The Fearrington Granary on Thursday, September 3rd at 5:30pm. Diane is one of the best producers of dry fermented apple ciders in the United States. She makes a wide range of ciders from heirloom apple to crab apple varieties all grown on her farm in Dugspur, Virginia. Diane has become a point person for many of us in the Sommelier world for information on apple farming, cider... Full Post >

We were excited to catch up with JoAnn Doxakis, for ZoWee, before her trunk show at Dovecote on Friday, August 21st and Saturday, August 22nd. Here is what she shared with us about her exquisite collection!
What has been your inspiration this season?
Texture. The organic feel of outdoors inspires me, so many colors and textures for all seasons. The culture of vacation spots I’ve visited is truly an inspiration, and places I haven't yet visited, only in photos is still inspiring to me.... Full Post >
Our love for fall is fairly evident here at Dovecote. Cashmere sweaters, streamlined leggings, cozy scarves, lots of layers . . . fall fashion is definitely our favorite.
Pairing these pieces with boots is only natural! Ankle boots with a knit dress and opaque tights is a look we love. A knee-high boot with skinny pants and an oversized sweater? Autumnal perfection!
Daniella Lehavi's boots come to us from Israel. They are handmade with the highest quality leather. We've loved her... Full Post >
