We were excited to catch up with Joanna Maxham, designer and owner of Joanna Maxham, before her trunk show at Dovecote on Saturday, October 1st and Sunday, October 2nd. Read on to see what she shared with us about her fabulous collection!
What was your inspiration this season?
As we move into Fall 2016 – I went back to the roots that inspired the Brand at the very beginning: the street style of big, international cities, and modern women who easily transition from casually chic off-duty outfits to effortlessly elegant work attire.
The Element and Saturday
How does your brand develop from season to season?
I usually introduce three to four new shapes per season, of which one or two will be exceptionally well received. Consequently, the current collection is a combination of the best selling shapes that have been carried over and new items that correspond to the most current trends. We usually also update palette with one to two fashion colors each season.
What is your favorite piece from your current collection and why?
My favorite piece from the current collection is the Enigma shoulder bag. Responding to the trend that favors smaller, handbags – Enigma is only about 9.5 x 8 x 3″ – but amazingly can easily fit every day essentials. The shape is inspired by a saddle bag, adorned with my signature raised detailing, stitching and very unique, minimalist hardware.
I am also impartial to Cast Away Too – a smaller, more structured version of the iconic satchel. The shape reminds me a bit of the “doctor bag” and pairs nicely.
Do you have recommendations on styling items from your collection?
One of my favorite rules is “balanced contrast” – pair a bold accessory with simple outfit or simple/minimalist accessory with a more elaborate clothing selection. The second rule is to try to introduce an element of surprise in an outfit – it could be an unexpected color, strategically placed accessory or an original way to carry a bag. This season – for example – I like wearing a cross body bag in front of the body and on a very short strap.
The Cast Away
What is you ideal OOTD (outfit of the day)? Please describe your outfit and how your brand plays a key role.
This fall season – trends seem to turn a bit away from my favorite minimal style, so I am investing looser fitting velvet pants, a pleated skirt, and a couple of more elaborated tops. I also found a double breasted deep navy wool coat with very ornamental buttons and a statement/oversized sparkling earring. I will pair the outfits with my black Cast Away or the Enigma Bag in deep cognac with modern silver hardware. The raised detailing and statement hardware on these two styles go very well with the trend.
We look forward to seeing you this weekend to welcome Joanna Maxham!

But what does it mean?
Outfit Of The Day!
Today's outfit of the day is perfect for a fall football game. Starting with a grey skinny jean from Iris Setlakwe and charcoal cashmere turtleneck from Kinross, we've layered it for late fall with an icy blue Kinross sweater coat and Matisse print scarf that picks up on the color of the coat as well as the green in the Graf and Lantz... Fearrington Weddings, Real Weddings
Katherine and Kyle tied the knot on August 29, 2015. These newlyweds said their "I dos" at the Crab Apples, and danced the night away in The Garden Terrace.
How did you and your partner meet?
Kyle and I met online on Match in the fall of 2014. We went on one date and were then pretty inseparable. We are always amazed that we had never crossed paths before. Louisville often feels like a small town despite its size and with us being the same age and both growing up there, we laugh at... Full Post >
In Our Spa
Healthy skin is at the cornerstone of supporting one’s overall well being. Modern lifestyle is hard on our bodies and skin. Many internal and external health conditions can affect skin function, thus leaving it vulnerable and devitalized. The pure herbal compounds found throughout the De La Terre Skincare collection gently shift skin into nutritional balance, where repair and healing can take place.
The Spa at Fearrington is proud to carry De La Terre Skincare products in Haven and use... Full Post >
At Dovecote, we strive for style in all areas. From apparel to dog accessories and everything in between, a stylish life is a happy life.
Labor Day is behind us and with that, it's time to put away the rosé and dive into a spiced red wine sangria. Bright lemons and limes and fuchsias are turning to charcoals and burgundies and soft doeskin color palettes. Goodbye to linen, hello to cashmere.
And hello to fun fall parties! We love to decorate with fall in mind. We have several tabletop... Full Post >
