Maria & Dave

Maria and Dave tied the knot on November 15, 2014. These newlyweds said their “I dos” at the Garden Terrace, and danced the night away in the Fearrington Barn.

How did you and your partner meet?
Dave and I met in 2011, when we were both working for the same big law firm in New York City. Dave shared an office with a dear friend of mine. I would visit her periodically, and for the first 3 months of those visits, I completely ignored Dave. With time, though started to realize how charming and funny he was. He certainly added new and exciting dimensions to my visits. Those office visits turned into coffee breaks which turned into drink outings and before long, we were dating.

Tell us about the engagement?
The moral of our engagement story is that Dave is incredibly persistent and accommodating. Dave flew back from a business trip one Friday afternoon in December. We had a dinner reservation at one our favorite restaurants. He intended to propose in our apartment before dinner, so we could celebrate afterwards. I was visiting with a friend and her baby and asked him if we could meet at the restaurant instead. Dave agreed, Dave tucked the ring away, met me for dinner, and re-thought his plan.

So, we woke up on Saturday, I went to a spin class, told Dave I would stop by the apartment before doing a little Christmas shopping. Dave thought that worked well – he could call my father while I was shopping, then propose when I returned home. But I changed my plan, did my shopping, then came home to settle in for a little while before heading to a holiday party.

When I got home and told him my new plan, Dave, as good natured as always, didn’t flinch, but encouraged me to take a shower. I did, he called my dad, and then was very eager for me to get ready for the night (I didn’t think much of it but wondered why he wanted to arrive at the holiday party so early). Also,my father isn’t very good at keeping secrets, so Dave was eager to seal the deal before I received an unwanted phone call! Eventually, I was ready to go, Dave dropped to one knee and proposed in our first home, our beloved East Village apartment. Despite the fact that he was on one knee, had just said “will you marry me” and pulled out a beautiful diamond ring, my response was, “are you proposing?!” When I finally pulled myself together, I said of course!

What made Fearrington the place for you to say “I do?’
Fearrington is so perfect in every way. Dave wanted to get married in the fall; I wanted to get married in my hometown, Chapel Hill, so it was decided that we would get married in the fall in North Carolina. Dave really wanted a venue with a gorgeous outdoor area to take advantage of the fall foliage. I really wanted a rustic space that we could dress up in our own way. The minute we stepped foot on the Fearrington grounds, we knew it was our spot. The Barn’s simple, rustic elegance was impossibly perfect; the gardens blew us away; we loved the Garden Terrace; and Gilda was so warm, hospitable and accommodating from the very beginning. We couldn’t say “No!”

Describe the highlight moment of your wedding day.
Walking down the aisle with my dad and into the Garden Terrace was such a joyful and unforgettable moment. My dad and I were laughing hysterically, though neither one of us can remember what we were laughing about. I walked into the Garden Terrace and felt as though all of the stars had aligned – all of our favorite people were in one place, surrounded by beautiful flower installations, warmed by a cozy and inviting fire; my best friends were radiant and wearing big smiles; and standing in the middle of the room was my handsome groom, whom I hadn’t yet seen that day! It was such a perfect moment; I couldn’t ask for more.

Is there anything you want to add about your wedding story?
I just wish we could do it all over again. The entire wedding day was so perfect and magical, from the morning when I was getting ready with my mom and my best friends, to drinking champagne and giggling, to taking photos in the beautiful sunlight (even though it was cold!), to walking down the aisle, to hearing Dave state his poetic vows, to the party, where we danced the night away! Within the blink of an eye, it was over, and we find ourselves holding on tight to every memory. We owe a huge thanks to the entire Fearrington team for perfectly planning and executing every last detail of our wedding, for keeping us well fed throughout, and for making the entire planning experience a happy one. Though our wedding might be over, our friendships at Fearrington are only just beginning!

Bordeaux Wine Dinner with Trey Stephenson

There are moments that I feel bad for Bordeaux. It is the region that created modern wine as we know it. It has been an inspiration to wine regions across the world, from Rioja, Barolo, Maipo Valley to the  Napa Valley, Tuscan Coast, and Coonawara. It has been keeping us curious about the nuance of vintage since the comet year of 1815, and we have been at its whims in prices since the creation of the 1855 classification. Bordeaux, no matter how you look at it, is the most important wine... Full Post >
