Tangerine Dreams & Hot Lemons

We have been busy planning -- and planting -- for summer beauty. Seeds were started in our glass greenhouse a couple of weeks ago, and are checked on daily for signs of growth. New cultivars we're particularly excited about include ornamental peppers "Tangerine Dream" and "Hot Lemon." Watch for their debut in the gardens surrounding The Fearrington Granary very soon!   Full Post >

Knit Blitz!

Some days are just perfect. Beautiful weather. Birds singing. Bright blue skies. Who could pass up the chance for a walk along the Creekwood trails on a day like this? I lace up my sneakers, step out my back door, and set out for a walk through the woods. But wait! What's this? Sweet little birds hanging from a branch. No, not one of the robins or cardinals that seem to be everywhere this morning, but little crocheted tweets in a rainbow of colors. A few more steps down the trail and there is a... Full Post >

Daffodils in Bloom!

Jenny's Garden is in full fragrant bloom already!  Our established plantings of fragrant white 'Thalia' daffodils were joined last year by the 1800 heirloom miniature Narcissus 'Canaliculatus' and, in honor of Jenny Fitch, the cyclamineus type 'Jenny.'  Come to smell the flowers! Full Post >

Sarah Susanka Visits Fearrington

Yesterday, on one of the most perfect days of the year, we had the pleasure of attending a reading in the Barn. The “Fearrington Friends of the Arts” group (one of over 100 interest groups for Fearrington residents) hosted Sarah Susanka, author and architect best known for her “Not So Big" message. It was a great turn out of both residents and local community. During her reading, she spoke about designing a house so it is a home, making it a space personal to you and designing it so it... Evergreen Clematis

Blooming as early as February some years, the delicate-looking, but tough evergreen vine Clematis armandii has become one of our early spring favorites here in the gardens at Fearrington. Fat buds open over a succession of days in even the coldest weather, turning from palest pink to ivory white. Once open, the flowers release their heavenly vanilla scent to surprise and delight passers-by. While still a lovely dark green and well behaved vine when not in bloom, they are in full... Dee’s Bouquet

We have a Mac computer in our office that is full of fabulous photos compiled into slideshow.  I enjoy seeing what images pop up as I walk by -– always fun memories!  I particularly love the photo of Dee’s bouquet that our wonderful floral designer, Mary Stevens, did a couple of years ago.  Dee was a sweetheart, getting married the second time and loving every minute of the planning, which of course made it fun for us, too.  Dee told Mary that she especially wanted violets in her...
